We’re afraid of making the wrong move. Afraid of failing. Afraid of choosing the wrong path. But no one talks about the most expensive fear of all: doing nothing.
There’s a very comfortable illusion most people live in.
The illusion that doing nothing is neutral. That staying where you are costs nothing. That waiting is free.
It’s not.
Inaction has a price. And you pay it every day — quietly, gradually, without even realizing it.
Until one day, you look back and see what all those years of waiting have really cost you.
The comfort zone is poorly named.
It’s not comfortable. It’s familiar. And familiarity is often mistaken for safety.
Staying in a job that doesn’t fulfill you — familiar.
Pushing your project to “tomorrow” — familiar.
Saying “it’s not the right time” for three years — familiar.
But familiar doesn’t mean free.
Every day spent in that space has a real cost. A cost most people never calculate — because it’s easier not to look.
Let’s take a simple example.
Imagine you’ve been thinking about starting an additional income stream for the past two years. But you wait. You hesitate. You tell yourself it’s not the right time.
Now do the math: if that income had only generated $300 per month over those two years — that’s $7,200 you never made.
It’s not what you lost by trying.
It’s what you lost by not acting.
Inaction has a very real financial cost — it just doesn’t show up on a bill.
Time is the only resource you can’t get back.
Money lost can be earned again. Time lost is gone forever.
Every year you don’t act is another year you could have been building something you wish you had started sooner.
People who start today will be one year ahead of those who start next year. Five years ahead of those still waiting for the “right time.”
The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.
Here’s something most people don’t realize.
Every time you tell yourself you’re going to do something — and don’t — you send a message to your brain.
“I’m not someone who takes action.”
Repeat that enough, and you start to believe it.
Inaction doesn’t leave you where you are. It pushes you backward. It erodes your confidence in your ability to change your life.
Until one day, you don’t believe you’re capable of anything different anymore.
There’s a silent stress that comes with inaction.
It’s not the stress of failure. It’s the stress of knowing you could do something — and not doing it.
Unstarted projects. Ideas never explored. Opportunities passed by.
It all adds up. And over time, it turns into regret.
Studies are clear: at the end of their lives, people regret far more what they didn’t do than what they tried and failed.
The right time doesn’t exist. It never has. It never will.
There will always be a reason to wait. Kids. Work. Money. Health. Timing.
People who move forward don’t find the perfect moment. They decide that the moment is now — and adjust along the way.
You will never be fully ready. No one is.
Preparation has its place — but it becomes an excuse when it replaces action indefinitely.
Clarity comes from action, not analysis. You learn by doing — not by waiting to have all the answers.
That’s a valid question. But it’s incomplete.
The real question is:
“What if it doesn’t work — vs — what if I do nothing?”
If it doesn’t work, you learn. You grow. You move forward.
If you do nothing, you already know what will happen. Because it’s what’s been happening for months — or years.
You were taught to fear failure.
No one taught you to fear staying stuck.
Look around. The people with the most regret are not the ones who tried and failed. They’re the ones who never tried.
Failure is temporary. Regret can last a lifetime.
Making a decision — even an imperfect one — moves you forward. Doing nothing keeps you exactly where you are.
And if where you are isn’t where you want to be — then inaction is the riskiest choice you can make.
Take a piece of paper. Think about something you’ve been putting off for months.
Now ask yourself: if you had started a year ago, where would you be today?
That number — that’s the price you paid for not taking action.
You don’t have to change everything overnight. Just take one step. Today.
Send a message. Look something up. Start a conversation.
Movement creates momentum. One small action leads to another.
Not: “Am I ready?”
But: “Is the cost of doing nothing higher than the cost of trying?”
In most cases, the answer is yes.

In one year, you’ll be somewhere.
The question is: where?
If you keep doing exactly what you’re doing now, you already know the answer. Because tomorrow will look like today — which looks like yesterday.
But if you choose to do something different today — even something small — in a year, you’ll be somewhere else.
This isn’t about luck. It’s not about talent. It’s about decision.
At Imperial Momentum, we believe everyone has the ability to change their situation. Not tomorrow. Not when the time feels right.
Now.
